Prokofiev

Music for cello and piano

The works making up the programme on this compact disc share several common traits. On the one hand, perhaps most notably, they all form part of the catalogue of masterpieces written for the violoncello, an artistic feature to which must be added the clear chronological affinity of the first half of the twentieth century, a period of political upheaval in which the arts in general and music in particular developed exponentially in an unprecedented way. On the other hand, the profound and dazzling beauty of these compositions stands out, generated from differing sensitivities and artistic languages also manifested in opposing sentiments ranging from the serene and meditative emotion of Prokofiev’s Sonata in C major for cello and piano (written in 1947 for the very young Mstislav Rostropovich) to the Mediterranean light of Sonata “nello stile antico spagnuolo” by Cassadó (Rome, 1925) or the formal syncretism exhibited by Anton Webern in his brief Three pieces for cello and piano Op. 11 (1914).
